Corps members protest non-payment of allowance, threaten to boycott election


“Despite the unimaginable billions received by INEC to prepare for this election, they failed to provide accommodation their ad-hoc staffs” says a corp member.

Corps members working as INEC ad hoc staff were left to sleep outisde Friday to Saturday morning when the election was postponed.

INEC failed to provide adequate accomodation for the Corps members serving as ad hoc staff – The affected corps members have threatened to boycott the election resheduled to February 23 Members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) serving as ad hoc staff with INEC have threatened to boycott the newly scheduled dates for the elections after the inhuman treatment meted out on them last night. The corps members said that they were neither provided with security nor a place to sleep and therefore had to spend the night outside in unfavourable conditions.

A corps member who asked to be anonymous said: “INEC had NYSC ad-hoc staff sleep inside and around primary schools in an unsafe and unsanitary condition, no bed, no mosquito net, no security, just a sudden postponement of the 2019 General elections.

Others corps members took to social media to complain about the treatment and wonder what happened to the money set aside for the welfare of ad hoc staff.

Premium Times also reported that members of the NYSC deployed to serve as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) staff in Ilorin East Local Government in Akerebiata are currently protesting non-payment of their allowance by the commission. A member, Muraina, who spoke to journalists said: “We went to our RAC yesterday on our own — exposed to risks and insecurity and all. No security for ad-hoc staff, including corps members. ‘Some were posted to Marafa People which is about an hour drive from Akerebiata, the INEC office at Ilorin East. They got to their RAC to meet unprotected and highly exposed RAC in a rural area. These guys slept in an open space in the bush with no security or anything whatsoever and no INEC official has come to address them.
